Three of us had lunch at Hard Knox this noon. Ben ordered the chicken fried steak, Ellen the bbq ribs and I of course got the oxtails. Various sides were collards, red beans/rice, peas/rice and mashed potatoes. Oops, almost forgot, a catfish po' boy (w/fries) for the table.
Three words: Big Big Plates! The CFS was tasty, crunchy and seemingly greaseless (gravy on side); the ribs were huge but tender and tasty; the oxtails were textural heaven, although the gravy could have used a little more ooomph. Sides ranged from competent (greens) to very good (although red beans were somewhat bland). The po'boy (excellent) was cut into thirds for our convenience, but we couldn't do it justice, at all!
Mention of chowhound garnered a big smile from the server and a visit from Tony, a very affable and easy kind of guy -- your usual Texas Chinese soul food cook dude! A real down home place for a homey meal.
