For my return from Southern California in June, I booked an overnight in Avila Beach to break up the drive. Staying in town the month before I had noticed Oyster Loft and its happy hour promotion, and made a point to arrive in time to enjoy a few bivalves. Oyster hour is Monday through Thursday, 4pm to 5pm.
During happy hour, chef's choice of oysters on the half shell are $1.50 apiece.
The oyster bar has a display of all the types available along with descriptions.
Malpeques from Canada were oyster of the day. I ordered a half-dozen. They were expertly shucked preserving the liquor and no shell fragments. Accompaniments were a charred lemon, a dab of horseradish, cocktail sauce and a unique rice wine vinegar mignonette that has a bit of soy sauce added.
The oyster barman asked me if I'd ever tried the local oyster, Grassy Bar, from Morro Bay. When I said that I had not, he comped me one. Wow, this was like oysters on steroids . . . fatty and rich with very concentrated flavor.
Happy hour seating is limited to the bar with seats facing away from the ocean view. But if I'm in Pismo Beach again, I might try the dining room for a full meal. Oyster Loft was a great pit stop after a long drive and place to grab a quick snack.
