In May before my evening meeting in the area, I spent the day chowhounding around the area. Our food stops ended with happy hour at Marston's 101. Located next to the Holiday Inn Express & Suites and open for less than a year, this seemed like a strip mall kind of place from the outside, but the sleek interior and sliding glass wall that opens to the outdoors creates an entirely different kind of feeling. This turned out to be a great find with welcoming service, family-friendly atmosphere and delicious food.

Happy hour is offered daily from 3pm to 6pm with the day's offerings posted on the blackboard. Draft beers are discounted by a buck and well cocktails are $5.

Pork meatball slider, $3, was so tasty, if a bit hard to eat. The marinara sauce was luscious and sunny tasting. The toasted brioche mini-bun managed to hold up.

Baja fish taco, $4, featured a huge fillet of crunchy battered local rock cod and jalapeño bits that set off spicy bursts on the palate. A lady comes in the morning to hand-make the corn tortillas for the day. Deliciously dressed with crisp cabbage, pico de gallo and chipotle aioli. If we'd been hungrier, I would have liked a second one.

Pacific clam chowder, $7, was not on the happy hour menu but was highly recommended by our friendly server. Carrot puree sweetens, thickens and tints the soup. The chowder was brimming with baby clams, bacon and Yukon gold potatoes. Very flavorful and not too thick.

At our time of day, the bar stools were filled with regulars enjoying happy hour. However, Marston's reaches out to families with a coloring station and on Mondays, kids eat free with an accompanying adult.

Striving to be a neighborhood place for regulars, Marston's has a day of the week specials menu.

Familiar with its sister restaurant, Marston's Bar & Grill, in downtown San Luis Obispo, I did not expect such a polished offering here. Our server encouraged us to come back for the wood-fired pizza. Check it out, and don't miss the bathrooms.
