What happened to William Grimes, the food critic of NY Times?

Grimes' Wednesday restaurant review column has been bylined by Eric Asimov, who used to do the "$25 and Under" column, for a couple of months now. I really liked Grimes' writing style. In addition to reviews, he also wrote a few articles in the Times that I enjoyed, especially classic ones on scotch whiskies and on lack of good espressos in Manhattan.

Does anybody know what happened to him? Did he quit or is he just taking a long summer vacation?
