Here's a long shot.
My wife and I are from western NY, where a fish fry is a single, whole fillet of haddock about 1"-1.25" thick, hanging off each end of the dinner plate/platter. Always battered, never breaded.
We were shocked and horrified at the midwestern fish fry, which to me seemed like it must have been made from scraps of fish left over after somebody got the good part. A plate full of 4" x 1/4" thick fish "strips" does not register as fish fry to the pleasure centers of my brain.
So... Is there anyplace in STL or Metro East that serves a "one-piece" fish fry, preferably haddock? I've been to Shlafly. Chips are wonderful, batter is great, but the fish itself is not the flaky, thick hunk of haddock I crave.
