Hacienda de Campos vacation rental | Old Las Palmas - Palm Springs

Last month I joined some friends for dinner that we cooked at their vacation rental, Hacienda de Campos, in the Old Las Palmas neighborhood. The kitchen and dining areas had a few quirks that might make a difference to anyone planning to do some serious cooking here.

On the plus side, there are ample outdoor seating arrangements. We made use of the larger table under the portico by the beautiful pool. I also liked the outdoor seating alcove just off the dining room and kitchen. The house is outfitted with a wine refrigerator so that bottles can be stored safely in heat and served at cellar temperature. The kitchen refrigerator was stocked with bottled water, kombucha and soft drinks provided by the owner. There was plenty of counter space for four people to work. The French stove delivered even heat on the cooktop.

Then some things soon became annoying. The Le Cornue French stove was beautiful but the double ovens were tiny. The kitchen equipment included half-sheet pans but they were too big to fit in the oven. We had to go out to buy disposable aluminum pans that could fit the oven in order to roast the chickens. Consequently we nixed the idea of making cookies, not wanting to line up a multitude of small baking sheets. The microwave is stashed in a cabinet below counter height, requiring stooping over to use, and opening the door to the microwave blocks the kitchen aisle. The two lights over the sink are on two different switches, making it necessary to walk between opposite walls to operate them. Though many of the lights in this house are on dimmer switches, the crystal chandelier above the dining table is not. With 20+ bulbs, I joked that the light was intense enough to perform surgery on this table. We loosened all but four of them to be able to sit at the table comfortably without sunglasses.
