Guayas, fka Eva's, on 4th Ave. and 16th St. is no longer worth it, sadly. Went in for dinner on Saturday and we had a delicious shrimp ceviche for $10, two great humitas (cross between a tamale and an arepa) for $5 and a fritada (fried pork on a bed of plaintains, lettuce and giant corn kernels) for $12. The pork wasn't great, but the plaintains were cooked perfectly and the salsa and lime wedges they keep on each table helped the dish in no small measure. The Ecuadoran Pilseners and passion fruit batida weer splendid. But then we got the check. $15 for ceviche, $15 for fritada and $6 for the humitas. They were increasing their prices and hadn't changed the menu yet. Pardon me, but I thought it was common practice to warn customers before they order. The waitress went back and talked to the owner, and they charged us according to the menu. That was welcome, but just left a bad taste in your mouth. And come to think of it, $15 is possibly too much for an entree for that neighborhood. It was a great $10 entree place, but an average $15 entree place. But I wish them well and would love to see them stick around and either improve the quality of their food or lower their prices.
