OK, I'm not doing so great in my quest for a location for a Friday night group dinner in early November. (We are set at 500 Jackson for Thursday night....). Sister Susan kept pushing Piperade, but a call to them revealed that they really are discouraging of groups on Friday nights. They said they would ask the owner, but I got the feeling that was just to make me feel better. La Scala (which is in the Sir Francis Drake, where we'll be staying) has a banquet room which looks beautiful on the website, but I have a few reservations: 1, their "banquet" menu doesn't thrill me, and 2, they have a minimum $400 service fee along with a $100 room rental fee...now, I figure if our group of 18 spends even 90 each including booze (the dinners would be 50 each, so that's a generous booze allowance to say the least!) that's still way over 20% service fee. (around 25%, to be exact, and then there's that room rental fee....) It just galls me a bit to have to pay that much....And our group may turn out to be as small as 16 if a couple of spouses opt out, which would make the service fee even higher percentage-wise....

So, am I over-reacting to the service fee, or do you hounds have another wonderful selection??? Something with a feel for SF's wonderful food diversity would be great, but I get the feeling the group really isn't into Chinese.....

Help!!
