It's official, as of a few days ago: the now-famous Grom Gelato of Northern Italy is taking over the corner that was formerly Joe's Pizza at Bleecker and Carmine. As a neighborhood resident, I was very sad to see Joe's leave their original location, and even sadder to see Abitino's arrive (what were they thinking?!). Well, Abitino's brief residency ended last fall, and the spot has been empty and papered up... until now. I think this could be a good move for the neighborhood: keep it somewhat ethnic and European, with an emphasis on authenticity and artisanry. On the other hand, I don't know how I feel about yet another gelato shop: l'Arte del Gelato opened up around the corner on 7th ave. last year, and the Argentinian "Cones" has its own spin on gourmet ice cream right in the middle of Bleecker between the two Italian shops. Not to mention that Cold Stone Creamery recently moved in up the block on 6th Ave. and Tasti-d-Lite just remodeled a large store in the area. No wonder Mary's Dairy on W. 4th closed. I wonder how many frozen dessert shops two square bocks can handle?
