Finally, I’m in Salinas on the right day to enjoy the annual luncheon by Temple Beth El. This morning I dashed over to the temple to pick up two box lunches for Mom and me. At 10AM, the parking lot was already filled to capacity and cars were streaming in from every direction. So my advice, grab the first parking space on the street you can find.
For $10 you have a choice of a corned beef or pastrami sandwich on rye. That comes with cole slaw, a fat kosher dill pickle, bundt cake, a couple packets of mustard, and utensils. Here’s what the contents of the box looks like unpacked.
The generous portion of shaved pastrami is from Grobbels in Chicago. Rather lean for my taste, but quite tender and has a nice cure and peppery bite. I reheated the meat gently in the toaster oven and split a sandwich with my mother for lunch.
I also bought a couple items from the bake sale. The apricot-almond rugelach are very good. The pecan chewies will be tasted this afternoon.
