grill pan and plate or electric griddle

we've had a Forman type copy for years that is ready to go. The base is splitting.
Thinking about getting a replacement, I've read lots of reviews of the newer devices and most seem to suffer from plastic parts in important places, like hinges. In addition, they're not US made, which I'd like to avoid.
Since we use indoor grilling, perhaps once a month for fish or chicken, it's not a critical item. It does seem like the cast iron stuff is more all round usable.
Would you rather cast iron or an electric countertop device?
