Green Table in Chelsea Market

I had an excellent meal earlier this week at Green Table. My 19 year old cousin was in town visiting, and I knew she was not a particularly adventurous eater. I was looking for somewhere not too expensive with some standard chicken, burger, and pasta dishes on the menu (for her), but also somewhere that served delicious food with some flare (for me). A comfortable atmosphere and good service would have been a bonus. Green Table delivered on all fronts.

We ordered the crudite tray to start, which had a great presentation, with the chopped vegetables artfully arranged, and little bowls of chimchurri, caponata, olives and cheese nestled next to some slices of bread from Amy's. The vegetable mix was unique and a pleasant surprise (purple potatoes, snap peas, and turnips in addition to the standard carrots and peppers). The bread was great, but the real winner was the chimchurri. The perfect balance of flavors.

For my entree I had the roast chicken with spaetzle. Fantastic. The chicken skin was crispy and deliciously coated with herbs and spices. (I normally take the skin off -- I know, I know -- but I couldn't resist a few bites this time, it was just so good). The chicken was moist and, well, chickeny. The spaetzle the best I've had (disclaimer: I think I've only had it once or twice), with just the right amount of bite, which it maintained while was swimming in a pool of delicious chicken jus. I ate every single bit of this dish.

My cousin ordered the cheese plate and almost finished it off, which, since she normally eats like a bird, I found a bit astonishing. (It also made me feel better about scraping the bottom of my plate to get the last nugget of spaetzle.) The waitress told us all the cheeses were locally sourced. I didn't get to try them (I think I would have been stabbed with the cheese knife), but word from Cuz was they were all very good. These were served with more Amy's bread, and some dried fruit.

Too full for dessert, we sat and finished off some bottles of water (tap I assume, since complimentary), and the waitress couldn't have been more pleasant or gracious, checking in with us even after we had paid.

All in all a great evening and a wonderdul meal. I encourage everyone to give it a try. The restaurant was mostly empty on a Tuesday night, which I hope is not an indication of its viability, because I plan to return often. The mac and cheese is calling my name.
