Green St Grill disappointment

GSG used to be a real favorite for me, but last night's birthday dinner for a friend was disappointing. Renovations that have occurred within the past few years have made the interior seem more like a hotel dining room -- cleaner and more upscale, but lacking the real character/warmth/eccentricity which used to define it.

The food was fresh and the portions adequate, but uninspired overall -- there was no obvious passion for great, interesting ingredients or preparations like there used to be here -- the basic steak and pork chop preparations were favored. The mussel appetizer is a great value (fresh musses, large portion), but again pretty basic (not much flavor in the broth -- cilantro scattered on top but not within).

The service was professional, but inattentive at times (empty beer glasses for quite a while without any notice). The waiter wasn't interested at all in correcting a mistake he made which resulted in a an extra order of mussels that went untouched (it stayed on the bill despite our inquiry, so we deducted it from what would have been a generous tip otherwise).

We'll be headed elsewhere around Central Square in the future for special occasions as well as everyday meals.
