Greek Islands Lombard and Mythos Naperville Greek - again

dickson d | May 18, 200306:54 AM     3

A coupla months ago, Mugs (I think) asked about Mythos in N'ville, and I replied. Tried it - mediocre and expensive, not exciting. He had heard about it from the proprietor of a Greek place further south, I think.

In response to the mediocre meal, and in need of a good Greek fix, I went to Greek Islands and had a very good meal (surprisingly good, really, way beyond my expectations). Friday, I returned to Greek Islands in Lombard, hauling along my coworkers because two of them had some noontime business in the area. The meal was not so great - bland and disappointing, really. The taramasalata was the least flavorful version I have ever had, no salty flavor of the sea at all. Stuffed squid were back on the menu, and I welcomed them. But they had also kicked them down another notch, and while the ingredients and presentation seemed very promising - five plump squids, bursting with a rice stuffing in a pool of sauce appearing to be made from a melange of vegetables - there was little flavor. Perhaps Shawn McLain has been consulting with the kitchen?

My companions, particularly my Indian lunch buddy, were very happy. He loved his greek chicken, which he had never tried before, and was planning to bring his wife there soon to dine, as she would love the shish-ke-babs, a pleasant and new variation on the Indian versions for them. This made me happy.

At the start of the meal, the waiter overheard me talking about my disappointing meal, and said - "Naperville?" He then wanted to know what I thought of Mythos, and what I had eaten. I told him what I remembered and asked his opinion. Said he had been twice, and liked it very much the first time, as they make real Greek Gyros, sliced from a mixed grill of roasts, not ground meat, but the second time was not so pleased.

I guess I have to go back to Mythos to try the Gyros, and because this is now the second time Mythos was recommended by a sort of competing restaurant. I will discount the lukewarm nature of the recommendation, because restaurants have the right to inconsistency, and/or he may have been trying to politely defer to my lack of enthusiasm.
