Mirandas, on the corner of Pickett and Chapel Hill Street (right across from Four Square), is a new taqueria opened by the folks who own the fruiteria next door. I gave it a try today, and it took some time to prepare my order of one carnitas taco, one pollo verdo and a chicken sopes (pardon my incorrect Spanish!) because the tortillas were made from scratch. We are so lucky that the practice of fresh tortillas for tacos has caught on here; you still have to search far and wide in NYC for that.
The tacos were wonderful, despite the limited meat selection. The carnitas was of the stewed variety, perfectly fatty (not too much!) and expertly seasoned. The chicken in green sauce was completely delicious, although maybe too watery to be in a taco. I could just eat a bowl of it and be happy, and fatter.
The sopes, well, made fresh, topped with house-made crema and a different cheese than usual--this one was shredded, and it had a complex and altogether different taste than the crumbly stuff.
Best of all, the tacos were $1.00 each, and sopes are $1.50. Give it a try. N.B., the kitchen looked very clean.
