I had an incredible steak dinner at an unlikely place: Ralph & Myrtle's, which is located on Dequindre just north of 11 Mile Road. An 8-oz filet mignon dinner is less than $10 here, and they cooked mine perfectly medium rare, with sauteed mushrooms. It's been a long time since a steak made me swoon, even at fancier places, but this filet nearly knocked me off my bar stool.
Warning: this place is a complete dive bar. As in scuffed black and white linoleum floors, cheesy 80's music, multi-colored Christmas lights on the ceiling, formica table dive. The video games looked like they haven't been dusted since the Reagan administration. I was way overdressed in my simple black dress, which I tried not to snag on the bar stool vinyl. I felt even more self-conscious as our waitress took our order wearing jeans and a baby blue T-shirt with "Playmate of the Year" emblazoned in pink glitter over her ample chest.
But oh, the steak. Yes, there was a salad and baked potato (unfortunately, baked in foil and ruining the mealy texture I love), but these faded in the background as I devoured the filet, which required practically no chewing on my part. I feel decadent just thinking about it now, a week later. They serve melted butter, not cold butter, with the potato, which I thought was a nice touch.
Make sure you come early for steak, because they do run out later in the evening. And get a Night Ranger T-shirt, holey jeans, and a mullet haircut if you want to avoid my fashion faux pas.
