Great soup!

Jeremy Osner | Dec 14, 1998 02:26 PM

I just had lunch at Restaurant Los Arrieros, in
Jackson Heights--wonderful soup! The place is small,
and very crowded at lunchtime; I had to sqeeze in next
to someone. I ordered the soup of the day, which is
rib soup on Mondays; it comes with rice and beans or
rice and salad.

I had the rice and beans, which I found good -- not
the best around, but a cut above most places in the
neighborhood. For one thing, because the place was so
crowded, they were fresh and hot; and the beans had
some bacon in them, and that texture that beans get
when they are cooked properly -- not mushy and not

But the soup was the real draw. It was in a thick
broth, I think a chicken stock made green by the
addition of copious chopped parsley and cilantro. In
the broth were large pieces of meat on the rib and
off, plus excellent potatoes (again, just the right
texture), yuca that was a bit too chewy, and platanos
maduros that were too tough to eat -- I just left them
in the bowl. Maybe they were just there to add flavor
to the broth, and let me tell you it had a lot of
flavor. All that for $5 1/2 -- they sell a smaller
portioni for $4 1/2. I need to go back on other days
to try the rest of the soups!
