Where is a great sopapilla?

I first encountered sopapillas in what seems like a past life on business trips to Grants, NM. There was a little Mexican place that served sopapillas. They were piping hot light hollow pastry either plain into which you poured honey, or filled with meat stuff. Either way, they were wonderful. I looked in the Bay Area for them and finally found them at a small place in Sonoma that has since disappeared. I don't know if they're really Mexican or originated in the SW US. Does anyone know where they're served around here?
