Being a certified pizza fanatic, i couldn't help but be curious when i saw a couple of years ago, that VPN Americas had certified a pizzaiolo in Twain Harte. Where? That's right, Twain Harte, right in the heart of Gold Country. So off i went and, indeed, Robert Martin's cozy little restaurant/pizzeria, The Prospector, was nestled in a pine grove in the heart of this tiny village.
To make a long story short, the pizzas were excellent. Home made mozzarella, house cured sausage, California plum tomatoes and Caputo flour and a pizzaiolo who knew how to handle his oven.
I went back last month and, if possible, the pies were even better. The thin crusts had the perfect outer crunch and chewy interior that pizzaphiles drive hours for. We even were treated to a dessert pizza, a combination of currants and cranberries and a couple other ingredients. Dessert pizza was new to me but it was eye and belt opening. A very sweet treat, indeed.
Martin also keeps a small but delicious wine collection and other daily special treats, like gnocchi, one night.
If you like trains, the Railroad Museum in nearby Jamestown is absolutely captivating and nearby Yosemite is truly one of the world's great natural treasures. And the pizza is divine!
