If you're tired of all the cookie-cutter Mexican restaurants in Peoria, you really must try Tequila's in Chillicothe (about 12 miles north of Peoria). They are located in a small strip mall on Rt. 29 ("Fourth Street" in Chillicothe), between Kirch's Place and Peters' Floral. They have the most wonderful food! While they do offer tacos, burritos, etc., their "house specialties" offer something truely different. The Molcajete is grilled beef or chicken breast served in a molcajete bowl with a delicious red or green sauce. It's topped with onions, Oaxaca cheese, pico de gallo, sliced avocado, and served with tortillas. The Shrimp Diablo is one of the best dinners I've gotten ANYWHERE in the Peoria area. I had it with the hot sauce, but a milder version is available. Their frijoles a la charra (bacon) is an interesting alternative to the regular refried beans.
The place is family-run and the service is as good as the food. Just remember to request hot salsa when they bring the free chips & salsa if you like things spicy. This place is more interested in delighting you with unique flavors (such as their mole sauce) than just searing your tongue with heat.
