Great Meal in San Juan, Puerto Rico

My wife and I missed a connecting flight in San Juan last Friday night, so good old generous American Airlines put us up in the airport hotel and gave us food vouchers for 2 meals that totalled $28. So,we decided just to see what we could find and took a cab, planning to go to Metropol, which was recommended by the hotel desk manager.

Cab driver suggested Jose Jose and it turned out great! Having been traveling for the better part of the day, we were wrinkled and worn. When the door to the restaurant opened we found the entire staff in tuxes and the tables covered in crystal and silver. They let us in anyway.

My wife had an appetizer of Breadfruit Mille Fuille with Crabmeat, Herb Mayonnaise and Vanilla Oil and I had the Roasted Boneless Sardines, "Habas" and Mushrooms, Sherry Vinegar and Christorras Oil. I'm not sure what some of that is, but both appetizers were fantastic. (Couldn't work up the courage to try the Veal Brains with Caper Sauce.)

Entrees were sublime -- she had the Sea Bass on the Grill with Fresh Mango Chutney and Cauliflower Raviolis and I had the Veal Chop on the Grill, Sausage Oil and Potatoes in Cream Sauce. Absolutely excellent!

Wine was a very good French merlot for a very reasonable price of $30.

Service was superb -- very attentive without being too familiar.

Just a great experience to help make up for the fact we were having to spend the night in San Juan against our will.

Oh, by the way, they didn't accept the American Airlines voucher, which would have come up about $200 short.
