Hospital food has to vie with airplane food as the butt of most culinary jokes. But what if that wasn't the case? "Hounds are known to go far and wide in their search for a great food item. What are your limits?
I have been silently enjoying a a fantastic sandwich for about a year now. Surprisingly, it is being served up in the cafeteria at the University of Maryland Hospital. Its a flank steak panini with asiago cheese. The real highlights are the steak and the bread. It's a marinated flank steak that is well seasoned and then thickly sliced. The bread is a nice crusty baguette that is grilled in a panini press. I suspect the cheese is of the Restaurant Depot / Sysco variety, but it none the less provides a nice sharp accompaniment. I've had dozens of these tasty morsels and can vouch for their remarkable consistency from day to day.
This is clearly the best food option in the Hospital, but I will go further and put it on my short list of best sandwiches in the city.
Please recognize I am not advocating risky behavior. You should be able to gain entrance to the hospital cafeteria without injuring yourself, your loved ones or that co-worker down the hall. I think at most it will require you talking the security staff into a guest pass. Be safe out there 'hounds.
