Friday night a friend and I were at Udupi Palace in Berkeley for dinner. We shared medu wada and a masala dosa, which were both good. Medu wada (sometimes spelled vada at other places) were just as described on the menu - lentil doughnuts! Dipped in coconut chutney they were very tasty. I'd get those again. Masala dosa was masala dosa - nice.
But by far the most interesting and delicious aspect of the evening was the FRESH gulab jamun we finished with. We were almost going to resist our craving - thankfully we didn't. I feel like I've had GJ at Udupi Palace before and wasn't that impressed. This time they tasted like they'd just been deep-fried that day - soft, warm, comforting. No freezer taste, no rancidity... And the funny thing was, they weren't balls this time! Definitely the first time I've ever had oblong (pill-shaped, one might say) gulab jamun!
