Well we went to see Carrie Fisher on Friday at the Berkeley Rep and wanted a place close by. I remembered Downtown which I hadn't been to since it opened. I wasn't impressed way back when but I checked out the online menu and noticed that they had fresh oysters so I knew we would be happy with those at least.
We had a great dinner and the service was top notch. We were seated promptly for our 6PM reservation and the place was almost full including the bar. There were a number of items on the menu that looked good. We started off with a 1/2 dozen each of Hama Hama and Kumamoto oysters and we each ordered a cocktail off the menu. I got a delectable Honey Blossom which was a mixture of gin, lemonade, honey, rose water, and cardomom. My SO has their speciality Cosmos which was too sweet for her tastes.
After we gobbled up the oysters, we ordered the Vegetable Fritto with aoli. There were perfectly fried thin vegetabes in a light tempura batter. Very tasty.
For our entrees, my SO had the quail served with a light BBQ sauce and grilled radiccio. It was very good and better than it sounds. I chose to have the butternut squash soup and the salad of roasted asparagus, frisse, and bacon with a mustard vinagrette and a lovely poached egg on top. Both were excellent.
SO wanted to try a glass of wine and our server brought over two tastes so she could choose the one she liked best.
We had coffee and tea to drink afterwards and a Kahlula pot de creme with a cocoa cookie.
The bread and butter were fresh and replenished. When I told our server that I really enjoyed my cocktail, he brought over the bartender who had come up with the concoction.
Even though we were in an out in under two hours, we didn't feel rushed but simply well take care of.
Just heard that the play is extended to mid April so check out Downtown if you decide to go or keep it in mind if you want a nice dinner in downtown Berkeley.
