I live in LA but grew up in New Jersey, on new york style chinese food which I love and dearly miss.
Now don't get me wrong, LA has some fantastic, authentic Chinese food, from every region and canton you can imagine. (you can always tell the authentic places because of the lack of both foreign customers and fortune cookies)
But.... I'm visiting my sister in new york this weekend and really want to sink my teeth in the the real stuff! (That is, the stuff I grew up on)
Where are the best places which typify quintessential New York Chinese food? I'm talking wonderful, richly flavored pork lo mein, great wonton soup, and those heavenly, thick skinned, chewy eggrolls with bits of shrimp and pork inside. It's impossible to get those outside of new england states.
Please help, New York hounds! And do write to me if you'd like some recs if you ever visit LA.
P.S. It took me years to realize that New York's "chicken chow mein" is actually "chop suey" everywhere else in the country....
