Just went to the grand opening of the new SM outpost of a popular Japanese restaurant. The original restaurant is on Carson St. in Torrance, and the new one we went to, both entitled MUSHA, is at 424 Wilshire in SM. Great little place, marrying homestyle Japanese fare with some European influences, prepared very healthfully, which I loved!!! The clientele at both consists of mostly Japanese regulars. Enthusiastic, friendly service from the hostesses to the GM.
Believe it or not, they offered everything on the house last night. (Had I known in advance, of course, I would have posted this sooner!) They served us six courses, and even the sake, Kirin, etc was comped. And the staff tried their best to decline any tips....
What I really enjoyed were their salads. The seared albacore tuna salad was awesome. The dressing made it -- a great successful marriage of east/west -- a soy, olive oil concoction. On the menu it goes for $8.80.
Also tasty were the stewed beef tongue with daikon and the agedashi dofu (fried tofu in a broth). There was just one other post on Musha, which raved about the pumpkin dip. I also want to try the octopus omelette, the steamed Asari clams with sake, and the stuffed Japanese eggplant with crab meat.
Not everything is a hit though.... I was abysmally disappointed with the udon a la vongole. Avoid this if you love linguine with white clam sauce!!!
It has a small bar as well, and a friendly feel to the place, very casual.
