Great Cajun: Where?

Jim Leff | Aug 29, 2002 01:59 AM

I'm editing this week's Los Angeles ChowNews entry on gumbo, and am miserable with jealousy.

I haven't had great gumbo for years. The lameness of the gumbo (ALL Cajun food) around NYC is a sore point with me.

I'm positive there's no great Cajun in NYC. I'm nearly certain there's none in the suburbs (yeah, I know the places in Whitestone, Queens and out on Long Island...fahgeddaboudit). I'm supposing there's none in New England or upstate NY. I suspect there may be some in the Midatlanic states somewhere, but damned if I've heard about them.

So my question is: how far do I have to drive for really great Cajun food? What's the closest to NYC?

Please try to keep it under 1000 miles. And no "pretty good," please. I HATE "pretty good."

PS--if anyone knows a killer place in New England or otherwise outside the Midatlantic region, please post a "heads up" to this thread and start a new one on the appropriate board.
