I'm going to let you all in on a treasured secret. The most amazing Sugarhouse experience in New England is at Gray's Sugarhouse in Ashfield, Mass. They are only open 5-6 weekends per year (close (April 7 this season). Get there before 8am or after 2pm or be prepared to wait in line.
This is the real deal. Homemade pancakes and waffles, local spiced & smoked bacon and sausage..everything drenched in dark or light amber syrup. The atmosphere is great. Its an old shack on a dirt road.(Got to go to the bathroom? Fine, use the outhouse) Sit on stumps at long tables while local girls and their mothers cheerfully serve the food.
The sap is boiling in the next room and you can buy all manner of maple products to take home.
Ashfield is located about about 12 miles from I-91's South Deerfield exit. Take Rt 116 north to Center of Ashfield and take a right just before the church. Its down a couple of miles on the right.
This is one of the most beautiful parts of New England. Also check out Northampton and the village of Shelburne Falls.
Enjoy and let me know what you think. Also, if you have other Sugarhouse suggestions....
