Gravensteins from Hale's Apple Barn, Sebastopol

Melanie Wong | Aug 18, 200404:48 PM

Yesterday morning I headed to Russian River Valley to pick up some Gravenstein apples before heading to Oakland for our chowlunch. This time I stopped at Hale's, just because the sign said "open" and it was on the correct side of the highway for me. It's been a few years since I last purchased here.

I pulled up close to the barn door in a shady spot, and as soon as I opened the car door, was swathed in the sweet floral scent of fresh Gravenstein apples. I bought two 20-pound boxes for $32. Dave said he'd have "fresh off the tree" for another week, then cold storage for a short time after that. His Pink Pearls were already gone for the season, but he will have other varieties available through October. He said I should remember to mark my calendar at the beginning of August to start looking for Gravs - they're an early variety and don't last long.

The aroma of these apples in my car is just unbelievable. The scent fills the whole garage. And, last night when I went to pull the car out again, I could catch a whiff of the Gravs from the sidewalk before I opened the garage door!
