gooseneck barnacles prepared by Fish in Sausalito.

Listed on the specials board as Barnacle Bill's boil. $14 for essentially a seafood salad, as the barnacles they served were mostly petite and the bulk of the dish were well prepared veggies, of which only the sweet corn was boiled. included were watercress, sweet grilled scallions, and whole, long, grilled sweet peppers. came with a ramekin of very tasty melted butter that none of the food really needed unless one likes melted butter on stuff. to my taste, the delicacy of the mollusc would be obliterated by it.

the barnacles are worth trying at least once if you're a shellfish aficionado. the shell portions were an attractive pale jade in color, the necks a dark greenish brown, resembling worms. the necks had a thin outer chitin 'skin' that was edible, and eaten whole tasted a bit like soft shell crab, while the interior within the shell was very similar to clam.

also had their Portuguese style clam chowder, tomato broth, linguica, potato, celery, a very savoury soup that could have stood on its own without clams, which were completely tender. mi espousa querida had a simple and delicious grilled halibut collar and we shared a pile of perfectly prepared chips (Brit meaning, their regular 'fries' are shoestring style).
