in fact, just about 15 minutes ago. The first thing I wanted to do after coming home was to post on Chowhound.
the place - Foodtopia in the 1600 S.DeAnza Blvd Mall's foodcourt. Some chowhounds have mentioned this places's beef noodle soup before, but I have yet to try that and a bunch of other things recommended on the posts
the goods - juicy, moist, intact XLBs with thin wrappers and just the right amount of seasoning(not too bland). There were 8 XLBs in the steamer and none were broken upon arrival. One broke in my spoon and almost a spoonful of delicious soup oozed out. I ate the XLBs plain and with the black vinegar/ginger provided. both were good.
I'd heard about this place's XLB from my mom first. Mom was raised in Taipei and Ding Tai Fong's XLBs, so even though we love XLBs and actively seek them out in the Bay Area, we'd never wanted to go back to any of the restaurants we tried(Su Hong in Palo Alto, 369 in San Jose, Taipei Stone House and some other places in the Ranch 99 mall in Cupertino, etc) something was always a little off - thick wrappers, bland seasoning, broken XLB, lack of soup, etc. I wouldn't say that Foodtopia's XLBs are the best ever, but they are on a par with good XLBs one would find in a decent neighborhood restaurant in Taipei.
Foodtopia is open everyday except for Monday. next time I will definitely go back and try the beef noodle soup + a steamer full of XLBs
