Good wine shop in Baltimore area?

myWeltanschauung | Jun 13, 2008 09:55 AM

So I don't have anywhere near the most developed palate for wine. I know what I like, and what I don't. An amateur I am, but I don't want to go shopping for some wine and feel like a total noob when talking with the shop owner/proprietor.

I'm not the biggest fan of the most popular wines (cabernet, pinot noir, etc.), and I seem to have more of an affinity towards the less popular varieties (malbec, muscat, riesling).

Anyway, I had a nice experience down in Southern Pines, NC at a little wine shop. I spoke with the manager lady down there, and based on a few tastings, she recommended some very nice, easy-drinking wines. Down to earth and cordial even after obviously spotting me as someone who hasn't seen the bottom of more than 12 wines.

So, I figured I'd ask here. Where are there some good wine shops that have a friendly and helpful staff?

I know of one in downtown Annapolis near the docks on Main Street, but are there any other good ones more around the Baltimore Beltway (preferably around Columbia/Ellicott City).
