Good spots for dinner for 1?

Sometimes I just want a nice dinner out, but my friends don't feel like spending the money, or making the effort to do something other than pick up the phone. I don't mind dining alone, I bring something to read while waiting for the food and actually enjoy eating in peace while watching folks.

The thing is, some places just get fairly snooty about it. I've been led to hellish tables, or even told that there wasn't any space, while a couple is led to the table instead (more money in 2 than 1).

Does anyone have some good recommendations of decent (moderate cost) places to have dinner alone?
