Good Russian or Persian in GTA?

kir | Mar 16, 2002 03:54 PM

Hello! I'm looking for a homey, authentic Russian(-esque) restaurant. Already tried Samovar Barmalay, and not crazy about it. I'm also interested in the cooking of the Republic of Georgia, but so far no luck. (I know, there isn't exactly a large Georgian community in Toronto.) I think a Chowhound once posted something about a Russian restaurant in the Dufferin-Finch area, but I can't seem to find the posting! While I'm at it, does anyone know of a good Persian restaurant? I've tried Elixir and Kolbeh (both good), but they're not exactly teeming with Iranian customers. I've been to Darvish, which was so-so. There's a place around Yonge & Steeles called either Karoun or Haroun, but I checked their menu and didn't see anything too exciting. I've heard okay things about Zaffron - checked out their menu, which seemed more general Mediterranean than specifically Persian. Until about six years ago there was a nondescript, dive-y donut shop on the Danforth (east of Pape) that just happened to also serve some inexpensive and good Persian soups/stews. If I could find something like that again, I'd be so happy.
