Hi, we're continuing a thread from the "What's My
Craving" board. Joe D. was asking about places in
Northern Brooklyn, and I pressed him to tell us about
what he's already tried. Here was his answer:
I like Northside - it's an
interesting setting and the specials are usually
pretty good (e.g pasta with shrimp and broccoli rabe
or escarole, ostrich!, buffalo!). And Brooklyn lager
on tap is a plus. I really haven't found anything else
in the immediate area; 15 blocks or so down is Giando
which is the poor man's River Cafe and well worth
trying. I don't like Bamonte's or Frost. Cono's on
graham is pretty good. I'm all ears to other
Joe, I don't like Frost either, but though I've yet to
give it a thorough try, I'm surprised you dislike
Bamonte's. Why? I do like Cono's...I put it in my book,
in fact (you know the unrelated Cono's pizza across the
street, too? Good pizza. And on the same intersection,
Rosalee's is a happening bakery, though they
inexplicably ceased to make croissants the moment I
raved in Brooklyn Bridge Magazine about their being
NYC's best a couple of years ago).
I like Teddy's (96 berry) an awful lot, but you have to
know what to order there (steak sandwich, quesadillas,
burgers, caesar salad, and--surprise!--hot fudge
sundaes). Nearby, Mugs Ale House (125 Bedford Ave.
Betw. 10th & 11th St) is a very nice place to eat (as
well as drink, though I prefer Teddy's for the latter).
I'm NOT one of the legion of fans of Oznot's Dish...I
find them overpriced, sloppy, pretentious, and mediocre
(they were better before they were "discovered").
I like Bean (167 Bedford Avenue) for gringo/hippy
Mexican, and I like Thai Cafe (but for simple things
like fried rice, never fish).
If you want to talk further south in Williamsburgh,
that's a whole other scene. I cover that area pretty
well in my book, actually (info at link below).
