Good noodles, bad knish

Pat Hammond | Apr 29, 200607:16 PM

I went to a matinee at the City Center on W. 55 today. On the next corner just west of there, on the left, is a really big deli restaurant. I wanted just a snack, so I asked for a potato knish to go. It was 3.50 or so, and huge. Nothing else distinguished it, though. The pastry crust was a strange yellow, and it tasted very much like cardboard. The potato was flavorless, too. I threw most of it away.

I was hungry after the play and passed by Menchanko Tei. I remembered it from something Jim Leff wrote. "Get the noodle soup." And so I did. A great big bowl of (soba?) noodles and miso broth, with chicken, shrimp, tofu, shrimp balls, oh, all kinds of good stuff in it. I won't be hungry for supper.
