Good Eats - East of Yosemite/Lee Vining

Last summer I heard some great reports from friends who told me about some great food in Lee Vining,CA. Just got back from Yosemite where we stopped at the Whoa Nellie Deli twice for lunch. We wanted to go back for dinner but the recent fires in the foothills made it unpleasantly smoky and we decided to pack up and head back to the Bay Area. This gem is at the intersection of 120 and Highway is inside a Mobil station/mini mart. It's a scene at lunch times but worth the wait....once ordered, the food comes out relatively quickly. We had the fish tacos - twice....consisted of two large fish tacos. Grilled warm flour tortillas with battered, crispy fish. One had a delicious mango, pineapple, plum, pear salsa - with Ripe fruit. The second one with a gingered red cabbage coleslaw. Well seasoned black beans topped with cheese filled out the plate. Visually it is a dazzling plate...the taste was not a disappointment. Later, we found out that you could have two tacos of the same kind, if you request. I'd consider ordering two of the ones with fruit salsa.
We also had an oyster po'boy - very crispy fried oysters that tasted very fresh and a nicely seasoned slaw...there was a bit too much bread but if you scoop out some of the roll it was very good. The Caesar Wrap with Grilled Chicken was a very generous portion of well dressed romaine with diced grilled chicken. Some of the salad was in a chipolte tortilla wrap and there was extra on the plate as well. They also have pizza and a variety of grilled items. Breakfast starting at 7am and open until 9 pm. The lime cheesecake was OK .... not nearly as good as the savory items. Their phone no. is 760. 647-1088 Give it a try.
