At the recent Oakland lunch Chowdown I asked Melanie if she could recommend a Sonoma bakery for a birthday cake. She suggested I check out Basque Boulangerie, right on the Sonoma Plaza.
I called them Tuesday, wanting a sheet cake big enough for 30 to 40 persons, for my father's 80th birthday party, which was today in Kenwood. Would have called earlier, but I had been in the wilds of Alaska, and it didn't make it off of the 'to do' list before my vacation. Anyway, they told me that they usually required a week's notice but that they could give me either a half sheet chocolate/rasberry or Carrot Cake on five days notice. Done. I ordered carrot, since my father isn't a big chocolate fan.
I was following mapquest and am a bit direction impaired in Sonoma, so it was not until I finally arrived to pick it up around noon today that I realized this was the same bakery/cafe/coffee shop hubby and I hang out at with a latte and a cookie (I like their biscotti) when family visits to Glen Ellen bring us through town.
So anyway, a big thank you to Melanie for the excellent guidance! Even though I am not a huge carrot cake fan, this one was excellent: not too sweet, lots of flavor, very moist texture. The decorations were quite cute (bundles of carrots, 'grass' around the edge) and the party-goers all loved it! I even saw my step-aunt, ninety-something years old, who had asked for a tiny piece originally, go back to cut herself a generous second serving! :-) Recommended.
