In my continual search to find places to eat with my Chinese grandma, we discovered Golden Garlic near Landess and 680. It has a combination of Tianjin and Szechuan dishes on the menu.
We ordered almost all soft dishes and tried the dan dan noodles, fish fillet w/ hot chili oil, ma po tofu, eggplant with garlic sauce, and diced beef with golden garlic. Almost every table had the beef with golden garlic. My other dining companion and I thought we should try it even if it veered outside the "soft enough for grandma category". It was almost 50/50 sauteed garlic cloves with cubes of tender beef and Szechuan peppercorn-esque seasoning. We took the garlic cloves home and threw them into greens and rice dishes.
The fish fillet was good and was served in a giant tureen. I could eat the hot chili oil on anything, it's addictive. The eggplant was also really good, it came to the table molten and custardy soft on the inside with crisped edges.
The dan dan noodles were soupier than we expected and we probably wouldn't order them again, but they weren't bad. I would order a green vegetable next time, but they end up being tough on my Popo's teeth, even after I mince them up.
We saw other tables getting either the green bean crepe, Tianjin or with house special sauce and were intrigued by it. I don't think I've tried that dish before.
The staff were very accommodating, attentive with water and tea refills, and helpful with my Popo's walker. It's a small place but tidy and the chairs are comfortable (all pluses for my Popo). Of the places I've tried in the immediate area, Golden Garlic has had the highest quality ingredients and the most interesting menu. Still looking for a mid-range, comfortable Cantonese place though.
