Golden Era vegetarian

Stopped by Golden Era on O'Farrell last week with my favorite vegetarian. He was thrilled to have three pages of menu selections to choose from, and this alone made it worth the trip.

We shared a Vietnamese crepe, lemongrass "chicken," and a potato and tofu curry, along with tea and lemonade.

I thought the crepe was the best dish. It was stuffed with jicama (and was it vegan and made with egg substitute? not sure I want to know), which was a little odd, but crunchy. Lemongrass chicken was yummy, although Chris complained it was too close to meat for his taste.

Total came to $32 with tip. A couple at the next table had walked over from the Fairmont. They'd hit all the vegan spots around town--Herbivore, Milennium. I wouldn't survive a weekend as a vegan, once I'd been to Minako twice and Cafe Gratitude for lunch.

My bottom line is this is a fine place to take someone who doesn't eat meat. But not sure I would make a special trip otherwise. I found the atmosphere and all the shrines a little creepy. Parking is easy.
