Gojo Ethiopian Restaurant [London]

On Saturday I lunched at a marvelous little Ethiopian restaurant flying so low under the radar that it isn’t even listed on googlemaps… but I did find it on some websites after a search today, since I now have its name. I’d thus far eaten at Marathon, Kokeb, St Gabriel Café, and Asmara, and although they all had their good points, I enjoyed this the best of all. Gojo, 171a Ladbrooke Grove, is just yards up the road from Ladbrooke Grove tube station; emerge, turn right & go under the bridge, on your left is a black-railed stairway going to the basement location underneath the Select Food & Wine shop. Across the street is the back entrance to Portobello Road’s clothing market. It’s a bit dimly lit & small but pleasant. I had the yesge wot (lamb), missir (red spiced lentils), and gomen (collard greens). The really sweet server asked me worriedly if I was dining alone or was someone joining me – I laughed and said no, but not to worry, I brought takeaway containers. I must say that these were the most generous servings I’ve experienced yet, so I felt value very good. Flavors were deeper and richer than previous experiences here in London too. I just had leftovers for lunch and the slightly over-sharp acidity in the yesge wot has mellowed wonderfully; the missir is richly flavored, with a slight sweetness not discernible Saturday. There was a nice mild hotness glow from it all. All was accompanied by 2 large freshly made, soft and spongy injera. I am Most pleased and will likely return before trying another place. The only slight downsides were that it could have been served a little hotter in temperature, and if it’s busy, you might have to wait for the food to arrive. Hours are M-F 1-11, Sa-Su 12-11. Now I need to encounter the Eritrean man I met at our Caffe Nero and tell him his recommendation was a Definite HIT!!
