the glory of a good mole.....cocina de maria, escondido

i made my way down to the escondidio street faire this sunday....on the look out for some good food vendors. but alas, only the typical teriyaki on a stick an polish sausage people.

this was ok because i had been wating to try a wonderful looking rest. i had noticed on a prev. jaunt to escon.

this place is cocina de maria....and boy was i glad i made it back.

first of all...i like the restaurants look --its a quaint place on mission ave. but brand new...only a year old. the walls are covered with beautiful carnceria style painting (there should be a museum for these nameless incredible folk artists). it is oen and airy with a back patio area.

second...its family run...maria is the mother from guanajato and her husband is from jalisco and the daughter is incredibly nice and welcoming.

the menu is about as authenic as it gets in a desert of cheddar cheese ladencombo plates.
huaraches, gorgeous looking little gorditas, birria, piccadillo, tortas aguas frescas etc.

and MOLE! as soon as i heard it was homemade (soloment sabado y domingo) i had to order it....it is my weakness (in a last meal death row type of way).

needless to day it was slowly devoured....accomp. by tender steaming tortillas hecha a mano in a cute tortilla basket...the dark mole in all it glory smoky, sweet, garnished with sesame. excellent spanish rice with bits of tomatato and potato, perfect beans.

please go here..next time you are in the area, you will be happy you did.
