Finally made it to Gingergrass in Silver Lake last night. I noticed they are now serving breakfast on Fri-Sun. but it was hard to tell what was offered besides eggs with baguette and pork chops.
I was ready for pretty bad food given the reports on this board, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Of course, the food doesn't taste exactly like your favorite San Gabriel valley hole in the wall. Of course, you'll spend a couple of dollars more. But, exactly as the poster below said about Cobras and Matadors, it's a fun place to hang out with friends where the food will be reliably tasty and it won't break the bank. Yes, it's crowded, yes, the waiter managed to make a snarky remark on the order of "I didn't get the memo" when he found out we weren't sharing aps, but who the hell cares.
When I think about the days when just about the only places to eat in Silver Lake were the Red Lion and Seafood Bay, I'm pretty happy that when people want to go out somewhere with a lively atmosphere and better-than-decent food, they can choose between Gingergrass, Malo, Cobras and Matadors, Tangier, Nicky D's, etc. Personally I can't afford Blair's or Cafe Stella, but it's good to have them around too. Oh, and please spare us your rants about the service at any of the above-mentioned places. Don't go if you don't like them, but maybe let other people experience it for themselves.
