Ginger gray/black inside - what is this all about

The last two ginger pieces I've bought at a reputable grocery are more darkish gray inside instead of what I think of as a beige color of ginger that I've come to know.

It may be good, but it is certainly unappetizing looking and I don't care to taste it even to tell if it is a good piece.

Is there such a ginger that is dark inside, or could it be a piece that's been frozen, or just old, even though the skin looks tight and nice.

Any suggestions?
