George Review - long

A friend and I went to George last night for the first time. Overall we have a very lovely evening but it wasn’t a total hit.

I started with a very tasty miso duck and sweet potato 'foie gras' dish, followed by red romaine salad with Dungeness crab, avocado and quinoa relish, then a really tasty seared black cod with potato soup. I can’t remember all the dishes my friend had, but she had a lovely rack of lamb as her third course. We skipped dessert but did have a great cheese plate featuring all Quebec cheeses. We had great 3 oz pairing of wine with each course and 1 oz of port with our cheese.

The meal was good value for money and the ambiance was just what we were looking for.

However, my big issue with George - the service. First, for our third course they brought us the order for another table. Thankfully we noticed quickly and they took the plates to their rightful owners. Then our third course arrived - my friend was having the rack of lamb. They didn't bring her a proper knife. I mean the lamb looked tender, but no one should be tearing apart rack of lamb with a butter knife. The last straw was the bill. We actually waited 40 mins to get the bill after our coffee cups had been taken away. We only got our bill after all the time because I managed to get the attention of the server at the next table. He has our server bring the bill, but our server then disappeared again! We had to flag down someone else to process the credit card.

I will give George another try since the food was very good. For now I will chalk the bad service up to the growing pains of a new restaurant, but if the service is anywhere new this bad next time. It will be the last time for me and George.
