A late night and temporary loss of kitchen use all contributed to an unplanned visit to Gennaros Pizza and Pasta on SEC of Arizona Ave and Ocotillo. This is the same place that a recent posting about Kokopelli Grill is located.
It was close to 8:00 pm when we stopped in the there were just a couple table occupied. We were promptly greeted, seated and drink order placed. The pizza is NY style and we ordered a classic combination that comes with pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, green bell pepper and onion. A steaming hot pizza arrived about 15 minutes later. Toppings were generous and I was really happy to see the fresh peppers, onions and mushrooms. The first piece was great. The crust was thin but crisp to the tip of the slice. Dough was just chewy enough. Unfortunately all those fresh veggies released their liquid when we pulled the first couple of slices off and the remaining slices became a bit soggy. Now, I enjoyed the first slice enough to definitely go back and order a pizza without so much veg to eliminate the balance of the pizza getting soggy.
I think this is an independent place and the owner was on site. He stopped by the table and asked how the pizza was and I shared with him the feedback on the veg. I was impressed that he was conscious of the issue – but acknowledged that they had been unable to find a work around.
