Walking the dogs through Washington Square Park today, my wife and I had a happy surprise - Otto is now operating a gelato cart at the northwestern entrance to the park.

Naturally, we had to stop for a couple of cups. At $4 a throw, it's not cheap, but it's fairly priced for what you're getting. My wife had a pistachio gelato that was very rich, full of deep nutty flavors and pleasantly sweet. I opted for a canteloupe sorbet that was light and just bursting with bright melon-y flavor.

The servings are pretty generous, and we agreed that next time we would probably just split a single serving.

The nice fellow operating the cart said that they had just been in the cart business in the park for a few days--they had hoped to be there in prime summertime gelato-selling conditions, but the City was being difficult about the permits.

We also were pleased to learn that Otto is now delivering throughout the Village--picked up a takeout/delivery menu.
