Gee questions

Does anybody have extensive experience cooking with gee? I've heard a number of cautionary tales from friends and the media about how easy it is for this stuff to make one sick. Added to that is the fact that you can only really find it in small ethnic groceries catering to Indian customers here in Montreal, and any time I've seen the stuff on the shelves, the jars seem to be covered in dust and have been there for some time. Not exactly reassuring from a health/quality perspective.
