Gazpacho - Home Cooking Dish of the Month, July 2016

masha | Jul 1, 201607:35 AM     92

Welcome to the reporting thread for the July Dish of the Month. This month we will be making Gazpacho.

We had a very tight round of voting for this month’s DOTM, http://www.chowhound.com/post/voting-..., in which Gazpacho was generally tied with Fruit Sorbets until Gazpacho pulled ahead about one-half hour before voting closed. If you are curious about what other dishes were under consideration for July, take a look at the Nominations thread, http://www.chowhound.com/post/nominat.... Thanks to all hounds who participated in the selection process. And, for the hounds who wanted Fruit Sorbets, we invite you to renominate for the August DOTM!

What is Gazpacho? Most of us think of Gazpacho as a cold tomato based soup of Spanish origin. But, thanks to the education that L. Nightshade and Madrid provided in their comments on the Nominations thread, I’ve learned that there is also a white version of Gazpacho, made with grapes and almonds but no tomatoes. In fact, the term “gazpacho” evidently predated the import of tomatoes from the Americas and referred to the use of soaked bread as a thickener for the soup. To read more, follow these 2 links that Madrid provided in her comments on the Nominations thread:

To get you started, here are some links to Gazpacho recipes:
1. Reposting here the link to Food & Wine recipes that L Nightshade posted on the Voting thread, http://www.foodandwine.com/slideshows...
2. A collection of “Gazpacho” recipes from the NYT Cooking Site, http://cooking.nytimes.com/search?q=g...

So, let’s get going preparing Gazpacho. We’ve got a 3-day holiday weekend coming up. Surely a good opportunity to try a new dish!
