Gateau a la Broche

I don't speak French or Spanish, and I am intrigued by a complicated Basque cake that an acquaintance once described his mother having made. I described this to a colleague of mine whose husband is Basque, and she knew the name for the cake. I did "Google" the cake, which is called "Gateau a la Broche," and read a few translated recipes which seem to involve an open fire and a spit. Can anyone tell me more, especially if they've witnessed the preparation of this special cake? The recipe seems amazing, but too weird (and illegal) to attempt on the patio of my condo, seeing as how I don't have the required chimney. I have this fantasy that I'll give it a whirl in the great outdoors someday. Maybe Burning Man needs a Gateau a la Broche camp or something...
